How sh*t are Dell?

Have to vent spleen. I order a lot on the web - CRC, Wiggle and even non cycling stuff  but I ordered a Wii Fit Plus for as a present for someone at the end of Jan. His birthday is 22nd Feb and they assured me I would get it on or before the 16th Feb - more than 2 weeks!!! Anyway as long as it arrives before his birthday that's fine.

The 16th came and went and still no Wii Fit Plus. I rang their number (which was very difficult to find on the website) and was passed from pillar to post at some call centre in India (by the sounds of it) before someone eventually told me that it would now be delivered before the 23rd Feb. Absolutely useless. The woman said that they haven't got any in stock. So why didn't it say this on the site when I ordered it and why was I assured it would be there on or before the 16th if they didn't even have any in stock?! Grrr...

Easily the worst experience I have had purchasing over the net. It will have take over 3 weeks IF it actually arrives on the 23rd.

DON'T USE DELL....

I have had nothing but superb service from dell...

fair enough...most of that has been on a corporate account where we buy a LOT of kit...

But a friends personal laptop....hard drive went wrong within 6 months....I went through all the Dell Diagnostics tools and got the error codes....

Phoned them up...they asked if i wanted to send the laptop to them, or for them to send a replacement drive to me....

I took the latter option..the drive was there next day....they havn't bothered to ask for the old one back...but its a paper weight anyway....

No, they are good value and reasonable quality. I've been happier with my Dell than either of my Vaio's.

Its possible you don't know what you are talking about. Name any brand of any product on any forum, and someone will have something derogatory to say about it.

Dell have got a reputation for poor quality and appalling service, unless you're being sarcastic of course. :?

  • I've found their kit is as is - its quite good for the money. If you ever want to consider upgrading kit or cpu etc. then do NOT buy dell. They make what they sell work together within the warranty and butt all else.
If you want a box capable of upgrading inside its go elsewhere.

Is that why lots of people are happy with them and lots of companies buy them and nothing else? Have you got a Dell, or had any problems with Dells, or are you merely parroting what "they" say.

The reputation is erroneous - if there are more of them, more of them will go wrong. They aren't the best, but then what can you expect for £400 when the best laptops cost £1600? Similarly, what sort of customer service would you expect from them? (Trust me, its better than Sony's).

See above. Think Starbucks, or Tesco.

True, and a bit unfair to single out Dell, but I had 2 laptops that lasted well under 2 years,
and got my mum a desktop that lasted even less. I know of a few others that have also
had issues and apart from a post above have never heard anyone say anything good
    about them.

Now have a HP laptop (3+ years) and a HP desktop which are way, way better for only
    slightly more money.

    ... all IMO of course.

That's because people don't post and/or rant about things that quietly get on with what they are supposed to do.

I refer to my earlier comment about there being a lot of them. Of course lots will go wrong.

Its also easy to blame. What went wrong with your computers? Was it anything specific to Dell, or did you do something that would have caused any computer running the same software to go wrong? What about all the other complaints? Did you look after the hard drive, or knock it around becuase its a laptop and its supposed to me moved? Did you regularly defrag and error check? Do you always shut down properly or merely hibernate? If not, did your computer go wrong simply because you took it for granted and didn't look after it?

(Note - not you, specifically, but just generally all the whingers out there.)

My Dell Studio 17 is an utter pile of shite. Worse mistake I made buying it.
  • Not sure why you want to buy anything other then a computer from Dell

On the computer side, if you buy the mainstream models they're very good. The ones at work get huge abuse and still work. My main computer in the house is a Dell and it's on 18 hours a day.

The minus side of Dell is the customer service is crap. I'm still getting emails about extended warranties not only for me but some other person who I don't know! Looks like they typed my email address in twice and mixed us up. Despite email replies they still keep coming.

All I'm saying is 3 dell products, all rubbish
    - Laptop 1 - Fan and Disk
    - Laptop 2 - Disk and power cord came apart in the socket
    - Desktop - Kaput. No idea why, so fed up, just chucked it.

    Compared to
    - 2 work Toshiba laptops
    - 1 HP laptop
    - 1 HP desktop
    .... all perfect

Make your own minds up, but I'll never go near Dell again.

It was cheapest from Dell. Admittedly only by about a fiver but I assumed it would be delivered pretty quickly as everythnig else I have ever ordered on the net has been. I didn't think it would take over 3 weeks and after 2 weeks that I would be told they STILL didn;t have it in stock... Useless shower... I'll never order from them again.

+1, my Dell laptop lasted less then a year before the touch pad went awol and the screen was knackered. My PC lasted a bit longer - 2 years before the motherboard died. I've been using Dell for about 8 years and the quality of their kit has gone slowly downhill

What's this subject got to do with bikes? Dell have their own forums where brickbats & bouquets can be posted, and it's more likely they'll pay attention there..

Completely agree with this. We use them at work and they've been fine. Their service has been very good when something's broken down - they send someone around to pick up whatever it is and drop off a replacement. No fuss at all.

There have been countless consumer watchdog investigations into Dell with reports from hundreds of customers reporting the same dire customer service and poor performance.

It's not a case of whinging, it's a case of expecting a decent quality of service.

I wouldn't touch Dell, I would never have bought a PC from companies like 'Tiny' , I wouldn't buy a bike from Asda, Dell are renowned for their incompetence.

  • I ordered a wii from Amazon on Monday, and a wii fit + game with board from Tesco Direct yesterday - wii was £119.99 (I had a big-ass voucher as an apology from amazon) and board was £84.71.
    Both with delivery.

    Both arrived today.

But yeah, a lot of websites do that 'we have no stock, soz' thing, what's lame is when they give you no notice to get the item elsewhere.

Ah, well, you therefore need to distinguish between the following:

    - Dells are sh!t

    and

    - Dell are sh!t

Different points entirely. I'd even agree with the former, once you've received your computer. But then, my expereince of other brands isn't any better at all. In my view, complaining about the customer service at a particular computer manufacturer is a bit like complaining about the customer service at a particular bank.

Or, if you like, "this pile of manure smells like manure".

    What'dya expect?

  • @HeadHunter - If you can brave Croydon I picked up my Wii Fit + board (not Plus as it wasnt out at the time, although I imagine they might stock it) for £5 cheaper then anywhere else at the time from a little games shop near Surrey Street Market.

I realize this might be a little late but if they do delay again could be another option?

As for Dell I can't say I've seen any issues. I have a Dell PII based computer that would still run if I dug it out of the garage and my dad's Dell laptop has only gone seriously wrong in the last 2 months after 5-6 years use. The HDD has been replaced but I can't remember if that was due to failure or a upgrade (suspect latter as it was only 40GB).

I'm hoping that Dells are reliable as one site I do support work at has started an estate wide PC refresh and are currently rolling out around 3,500 Dell laptops/desktops - can't wait to get my hands on the high-end quad core machines :-)
