Hi All, I have a relatively new Giant defy with alex rims and kendra tyres 700 x 25. Have been cycling approx 80 miles a week for 3-4 months. recently have had a spate of punctures and with todays weather started to get frustrating. i have checked both the tyre and rims for any sign of embedded objects and but cant find any trace, so assuming the tyres have got so thin, that any small sharp object is piercing the iner tube. so will go to LBS tomorrow and look for new tyres? any recommendation, and is it normal for tyres to wear thin afater a few mnths use?

any advice gratefully received.

thanks

Have a look at Schwalbe's tyre range.

  • I use Conti Gatorskins on my FCN 4. So effectively the same bike/rims. I cycle through areas with lots of glass, thorns and debris and very rarely get a puncture. The are not 100% perfect, but a million times better than the standard fit Kendas

The ultimate puncture protection is from Schwalbe Marathon Plus, on the downside they are heavy and can be difficult to fit.

Next level down in protection, still decent but lighter, are options like Conti Gatorskins (I believe they have just released a new 'hardcase' version), Specialized Armadillos, Vittoria Rubino Pro, Bontrager hardcases Michelin Krylion etc.

I've been very happy with Specialized Armadillos. Hard wearing, grippy enough and impervious to most things other than nails...

+1. I've been using Durano Pluses for about three months, and I'm very happy with them so far.
    FCN 2-4.

  • Both Mark Beaumont and James Bowthorpe used Schwalbe tyres

I changed the kendras on my Defy after glass ruined them in the first week. Switched to conti ultra gator skins and have had no problems in 3500 miles.

    How about going tubeless?

  • Schwalbe marathon +'s 5000 puncture free miles after a puncture every 100 miles on previous tires. They are heavy, don't grip as well as others and are an utter b*stard to fit, but even after pulling 4 drawing pins out of the rear one, no puncture. Best £25 I've ever spent.

I do understand that as I type this the tyre is probably going flat....
