Recently purchased a Garmin Edge 705, I am having a few issues with planned routes. I have planned routes using mapmyride and ridewithgps.com, after I have planned the routes I transfer the route using the gpx function as recommended by Garmin. Prior to my ride I activate the route I want to follow on my Garmin, once loaded I set off. Within minutes of setting off I am re-routed to a road which I have not planned to be on.

Is gpx route the only option to export files? Any advice would be appreciated?

somewhere in the menu you can turn re-routing off but it should only do it if you've gone off route anyway.

also gpx files tend to work better done in mapsource as it's the same map thats in the 705.

  • I have found that gpx files created in Memory Map, and saved, then loaded as per Edge Manual, do not translate well. If I load them into Mapsource, then transfer to the Edge they are spot on. I have found that the best way to make the Edge follow exactly the route you have laid out is to turn off re-routing, and turn off lock to road, and have guidance method set to off road. Obviously if you get lost, or change you mind, you might need to turn these back on. The problem is related to the fact that all gpx files aren't necessarily exactly the same format, and all devices don't necessarily handle them in just the same way.

  • Or just create/use .TCX courses and be done with it.

None of these routing problems then. No prompting either (unless you are off course). A good thing in my book.
  • Yeah - but not all mapping packages support TCX

not all maps are the same, hence the problems with gpx files done online.

Never had one problem using the city navigator maps in mapsource.

  • if you go to bike route toaster and use their site to convert gpx files it will be far easier.

    http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx

you can upload the gpx edit it, then download it as tcx(what garmin calls a couse)

when using gpx files the edge looks at it and creates its own route via the start/finish and whatever waypoints you put in...and if you go off, it will re route. You may be confusing the Garmin lingo, gpx files are just a collection of waypoints, and tcx or crs files are courses that use thousands of small points they dont show you.
