Hi folks,

New to the forum and biking world. Looking for some advice.

Planning to get a hardtail mountain bike for approx £700-£800.

Looking at these at the moment, the Orange is an 06 and could pick it up for about £400 second hand:

  • the orange is quite a different bike to the other two. What sort of riding will you be using it for?
  • looking to start doing bit of offroad and some lighter stuff with the missus.

the more i read about bikes/models and research the more confused i am getting! i understand a lot of it is down to how the bike feels for the individual and from what i can see, everything in that price range seems to be of similar quality. I live in Stirlingshire in Scotland so can travel around easily to a number of different stores.......

Boardman looks like a great choice to me. The Orange is probably a bit much for what you need.
  • You get alot for your money with the boardman. + £100 accessiories voucher on that model too. You could use this to get yourself a decent lid, gloves and some maintenance kit.

You need to try them out for size though before you make the decision.

Have you looked at Merlin cycles own builds? You get much better components for you're money. Good quality but no frills frames. I've got an older one and I recently recommended a malt 1 to a friend, he's well chuffed.

I would have thought the Orange G3 would be a better comparison.

I have the previous model and love it.

I would have the G3 or Rockhopper myself

Not mentioned yet, but I can give the thumbs up to the GT Avalanche 1.0 '10 model.
Good frame and well specced overall, based on my limited knowledge of these things

Have a look at this, better spec and very highly rated frame much cheaper than the others
