First proper road bike

I am currently riding this. Thinking of going over to a drop bar bike with a budget of about £600. Thinking of maybe Giant Defy. Will the drops make a significant difference at this entry level bike stage?
Looking at a compact. 50/34 and 12/27.
Open to suggestions/comment.
