Sorry another wheels thread!

I'm in the market for a new set of wheels - don't want to spend more than £200. I don't think I'll do any better than a set of Fulcrum Racing 5's at £160 from Ribble.

Has anyone got any other suggestions?

Thanks

How have you found the hub spline? reports on here suggest it wears easily?

Well I've heard it only occurs on the Shimano ones, I got the Campag ones you see, and they've been brilliant with no damage to the hub spline.

Received my Campag fit Model B's today, they are great value for £99. Are they rebadged Reynolds Alta Comp's? They have Alta Comp printed on the shipping labels.

The 2008 model B's had a 9 or 10 speed freewheel body, this means lower profile splines, and on an aluminium body this meant that 10 speed cassettes could chew them up, this applies to all brands not just Planet-X, that use aluminium. Shimano are steel.

Since 2009 the Planet X model B's have been 10 speed only, with taller splines, chewing problem no longer exists.

Fantastic wheels, have 2 pairs, lot of miles, light, smooth and tough!

Hmm, I'm still using a 9 speed cassette, so that probably rules them out then.

The reason I'm after some new wheels is because of a set of Reynolds Alta Race that I bought on clearance from Planet X. They were a great set of wheels to ride but totally unreliable - several broken spokes and two replaced freewheels...

I'm after something more reliable this time.

How about Campag Ventos, you can spot them from a mile off. Ditto for a white tyre such as the Vittoria Rubino Pro - just to remind you it's WINTER

They need to be Shimano compatible.
  • You can get Shimano fit Ventos. Or at least you could 3 years ago when I got mine. They were a good winter wheel - reliable and tough, they went 3 winters before a hub flange broke, which is fair enough IMO.
