Hello!

Im fed up with bending XT derailleur's (average about 5 a year). Can i use a Saint one instead or do i need to get a special hub\axle? I've got a 08 Marin with a standard hanger setup at the moment.

Thanks

Tim

5 a year?! Wow, I've never broken an XT mech.. maybe I ride like a pu$$y..

Saint will be fine though mate, should fit straight on.

Hmm, you'll know soon enough but if you find you're bending Saints aswell then how about just fitting deore? Damn site cheaper than a Saint or an XT and iirc lighter than a saint.

how have you not killed your frame?

the new saints are normal fitting.

but i would be looking at what is causing the problem.

as it must be costing a lot in mechs and mech hangers.

    what Marin is it?

Its a Wolf Ridge. i do tend to ride more freeride than xc and do a lot of jumping etc (www.thewayoutwest.co.uk). its mostly slipping off sleepers etc that do the damage. once the XTs get hit once they're never the same again, just need something a little tougher.

hahaha, sorry but that's classic!
  • what?

a rohloff is a sensible and not in any way spendy solution to constantly breaking mechs.

I wasn't suggesting a sturmey 3 speed fixed gear hub or anything

lol, I know mate, but whenever people say hub gears I immediately see an 80 yr old man 'sending it' off a 'sick' stepdown.....

But seriously, it seems like you need to just buy a deore and, over time, improve your handling. :)

  • I think those mech protectors will make thigns worse, perhaps a breakaway bolt, so the mech escapes rather than taking the hit? You'd need to carry needle nose pliers and a spare with you though.

You using shadow or regular mechs?

As above, at that level of attrition I'd buy whatever's going cheap on CRC/Wiggle/Merlin.

The new Deore stuff is great anyway.

I learnt that the hard way, 4x X9 Supershort mech's in a week at €110 a pop. In the end I just said sod it and bought a 'cheap' X5 and lengthened the chain - bloody thing has lasted 18 months so far!

or... buy some grippier tyres, so you don't slip off the skinnies! Or get an x5 if your determined to keep breaking things, they are actually pretty good.
  • Saint will only work with a double or single chainring so ya know :)

oh and the m810 is standard. the m800 is 10mm bolt thru fiting.

Ah, check out the mech protector, I had one of those when I was 12  It did exactly what it was supposed to do, protected the mech and bent the frame.

How about you try only falling off on the other side?
