Computer problems

I know this is a cycling and not a computer forum, but can anyone help with this problem? Everytime I try to run a programme I get a box pop-up asking me to "choose the program you want to use to open this file". This happens for everything I try to do. Any ideas anyone? Or maybe a good computer forum where I can post the question.

Don't you mean try and open a file? A program will run unless there's a corruption within it settings.
If for example you double click a "pdf" file and it asks, you can also right click the file and open with.
You can also go into Start ->Settings -> control Panel -> Default ProgramsCAAD9

"exe" files...0 -
Sounds like the program your trying to run has a corrupt or missing file. Try re-installing the program.0

Actually, I've just re-read your original post, and see that your referring to all programs. This could be any number of issues. Try a virus scan, and a spyware/mallware scan (use windows defender of adaware). You may need to boot into safe mode for this to work, as obviously you can't open any programs as is. If this fails, try a system restore to a restore point when you could open programs. Can you remember when you could last open programs. Have you installed any new software recently? Have you had any issues online? Failing this, it may be a case of re-installing windows.0

It's not just one program, it's every program I'm trying to run...0 -

Not sure if it helps, but I can run programs, but not directly. If I go to run say photoshop from the icon on the desktop, it doesn't work. But if i go to "Start", then pictures, then right click on a photo and "open with photoshop", it opens fine.
I haven't installed any new software. It all went wrong when I was on the P & O website and a number of windows opened up, I closed them all and re-booted and now it won't work properly. I think you might be right, I may have to reinstall windows *sigh*0 -
Sounds like you have lost a .dll file. If the programs are working from the start menu and not a shortcut, it is repairable. Try a system restore to a point before you visited the P&O website. This should solve the problrm.0

Argh, this is annoying. I can't run the system restore, I get the same window pop-up asking me to "choose a program..."0 -
Ok, open a command prompt window (start-all programs-run and type cmd enter). Type C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe and press enter, should start the system restore process for you. Failing that booting into safe mode with command prompt, and run system restore from there. To do this, at the command prompt C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe and press enter, should start the system restore process for you.0

+1 for the virus thing - some viruses yank the system so that any attempt to run a program redirects you to the virus (stops you from running AV or system tools for a start).
If you have AV software it may possibly have fixed the virus without resetting the system settings. Or the virus could still be there...0 -

OK, I'll give that a try when I get home tonight, I ran out of patience last night! I'll let you know how I get on with it. Thanks for all your top-tips!0 -

Hey TW43,
Not really. Couldn't get the restore to work from either safe mode or a cmd prompt. I did also get a message from Norton yesterday informing me it had removed a Trojan.
But I have been talking to out IT man at work, hopefully he can sort me out. Looks like it won't be a simple problem to sort out. I can ususally sort most things out, but not really a computer person, I would be posting in "IT beginners" section if there was one!
But thanks everyone for all your suggestions!0
