I am off to Crete at the end of July for 3 weeks and thinking of taking the bike along.

Been to Crete loads of times and I have never seen anyone riding there, it can get upto 40 degrees plus midday and is really mountainous on the South side of the island.

Has anyone road over there and got any experience of the terrain and conditions

Cheers

Not sure if I'm much help but I cycled across the north coast side of Crete about 15yrs ago so I don't have much info on the rest of the island. Almost anywhere you go in Crete will have hills but the roads at that time were in fairly good condition and in late September the traffic was fairly light even on the main highways where most of the tourist traffic traveled. Going off the highway I often ended up on quiet, beautiful, scenic and almost car-free roads. Even when entering the major towns traffic was not too bad. Of course July may be completely different with more tourists and hotter weather. I rarely saw another cyclist my whole time there and the only cycling club I saw in all of Greece was out riding one sunday in Crete. They seemed a little surprised to see someone out touring on a bike. I would def recommend taking your bike.
