friendly day events/races

does anyone know of any 'friendly' competetive mtb races ?
Not talking downhill, just some xc / trail days where you can go and compete against people of a similar level (beginners/experienced etc) for fun.
wouldnt mind biking/running events either.

The Test Valley Series are very good
I did the 50KM "challenge" in June last year and it was awesome.
The website I linked isn't quite up to speed, they're still honking on about the 2009 series, but I am certain they'll update it as spring approaches
