as the title says is there a massive difference between running a 50 / 26 set up (think thats right spec says chainring 50/34 and cassette 11/26) Dont understand the technical side of these things

my mate said yesterday he is running a 42 17 set up, and just wondered if he would have much more of an advantage up hills?

Thanks

50/26? Do you mean 36? Or do you have a triple? The teeth range on the front mechs is usually only 16.

Have a look at this thread:

Is your mate on a SS? 42x17 will be a bigger gear than most of your gears on the 34 ring (I think - I've not done the GI calcs), with 26 being the easiest, 11 being harder (you often find 11-tooth sprockets on bikes with 50-tooth chainrings, and 12-tooth on those with 53s).
