Kids cycle groups/clubs

Seems that in pretty much every town you'll find ballet classes, karate, judo, swimming, tennis, choirs, and probably a few more besides.

But where are the cycle clubs for kids? Doesn't seem to be much around: it would be nice for my son to try some racing or whatever.

  • If you search on British Cyclings website for Go Ride registered clubs you should turn something up - I know that there are several clubs close to me operating kids things on Saturday mornings under the Go ride system.

Go ride that my kids have done teaches bike handling skills - riding round cones etc - as well as little time trail races at end of session. Some clubs point more into local racing scene than others.

You don't say where you are but I am just North of Chester.

  • There are a few listed, nothing truly 'local' though - there are only 20 for the whole South-East. We are in Woking, a 'cycle town'; there are youth groups within 20 miles, but not much here that I can see.

have you popped into the LBS and asked?

    many have "shop" rides etc

Very few club's around for kid's (depending on what part of the contry you are from).

You really need a dedicated facility, the closest to us is about 40-50 miles away. They are building a new track in Rhyl, but that will still be 30 miles away.

The club's that do run them depend on dedicated volenteer's, pretty sure if you hook up with your local club they may help out, but trying to find somewhere to ride will be quite tricky, I've trawlled through google earth looking for something local to no avail

We are very fortunate to have a 1km cycletrack in Shrewsbury. Its existence is mainly due to years of pestering by Mid-Shropshire Wheelers, a Go-Ride accredited club. The number of hours put in my a very small group of volunteers is incredible. Meanwhile the council doesn't bother promoting the sessions or the facility so you'll only see MSW members' kids there on Saturday mornings.

Shrewsbury is now a Cycling Town, has received a dollop of Lottery cash, there's a fancy website and Sustrans Bike It officer. However, the people whose job it is to promote cycling in the town manage to do much less than those who do it in their spare time for nothing.

Enough ranting. If you want to hook up with people the local bike shops or clubs in the area are the places to start.

have you been in touch with Bikeability? they may have a few contacts
  • Where are you ? I have found some by accident when trawling the web for other things. Have you tried asking you local council, or are you near a cycle track ?
