    yep

as the film points out, the yanks gave the afghanis sh1tloads of weapons to take a pop at the russians but couldn't be arsed to rebuild the country that the war had ruined

and guess who was one of the prime recipients? Osama Bin Laden, come on down!

hmmm, so a country gives weapons to a foreign nation to assist in the defeat of one of its enemies, seems sensible.

then leaves the country in ruin.

shame they didnt have a crystal ball all those years ago.

they did, they knew exactly what they were doing, analysts and planners are paid to know this. Cold war in it's latter stages being played out and knowing full well what Wahhabism was and where it was going. It's called lining the next one up. War without end / geo-political chess game.
  • In fact, the more fanatical the Mujahideen were, the more support they were given, because it was believed that they would fight harder against the Soviets. Therefore after the conflict, it was the extremists who were better placed to fill the power vacuum.

    Part short-sightedness, part stupidity.

You haven't read Gore Vidal have you? 'Perpetual War For Perpetual Peace', he shows that America has been in a state of war constantly since the Berlin Airlift of 1948 until the present day. Hell, the Korean War is technically still going!

I saw the overview never got round to reading it though, but I've read most of his other stuff over the years. Same goes for Chomsky.

You're better read than I am then :P it's the only book of his I've read so far, but I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed with it. It contains the series of letters between himself and Timothy McVeigh, which is very interesting. Thought provoking stuff :)
