Hi all im very new to road biking and also very poor :( . I have never riden a road bike always mountain bikes. So some serious advice needed. My budget for a new bike is £2-300(with pedals) any suggestions???(other than stick to your mountain bike)

Are they similar to ride?

Why do people normally spend £800+ on ther first new bike? Whats wrong with the cheaper end of the market

HELP

Mike - for that price, you should be looking to pick up a secondhand bargain from Ebay or similar.

New bikes in that price range will be heavy and badly equipped. Although they seem a bargain it's really a false economy, the poor quality components, etc will need replacing more often than better quality ones.

From your post I can't tell whether your road riding will be for pleasure or necessity. If it's for pleasure, I suggest fitting your MTB with some slick tyres and seeing if you enjoy the whole road experience before thinking about a new bike. £200 - £300 is still a lot of money to sepnd on something you may not like.

As above, £2-300 isn't going to get a decent new road bike. However, it should be able to get you a decent second-hand bike. If you know what frame size you need, you could post an ad in the 'Road - Wanted' section here and look in the 'Road - For Sale' ads too. :D

  • My Cannondale, for example, cost 250 quid off a mate when i got it and was a fairlt decent bike for the dosh. :)
  • At that price range definitely look second-hand. There are some steals around in terms of quality bikes that are pretty old but still really nice.

I brought a decathlon 7.1 sport a few years back - I commute on it daily and its been fine. It doesn't have the response of more expensive bikes - but certainly good enough for a starter bike. Check out decathlon.

in agreement with everyone I reckon, got a Giant OCR off ebay for a song! Theres always loads of OCRs appearing and they make a pretty good introduction to road riding ... am like you, no money, but the OCR has been my one and only bike for some time now and I still get a buzz getting out on it!

Hi MUFCMIKE - At that price why don't you try a hybrid as a stepping stone to road biking. It will be faster than mountain bike on the roads. You could get a new Giant CRS 3 for about £325.

Unless you really know what you are looking for in a road bike, I would have thought you would have to be very lucky to find a good second hand road bike that fitted and suited you perfectly.

I bought my current MTB from a friend for £150 4 years ago and it's still going strong.

Obviously I've bought the occasional upgrade for it ie wheels in 2008, then frame, groupset, in 2009 then I couldn't resist a new finishing kit a couple of months ago. For £150 it's amazing and will last me for years to come. :D

Get yourself to a LBS or bike superstore, get measured up with the intention of buying a bike. Then surf the E-Bay highway for the size you need...Job sorted.
