I have some old bibshorts in a roubaix fabric so they are warm enough for me to wear with legwarmers down to about 2degC.

I would like to buy another pair of bibshorts with some warmth about them but but can't seem to find any, only wafer thin lycra ones.

Can anyone recommend some?

  • If it`s cold enough for wearing roubaix stuff then most people go for bib-tights in roubaix-type material. DHB Merstons from Wiggle are recommended by all and sundry :)

Santini Sirios from Predas. There's some Northwave ones and Peall Izumi do some thermal shorts too.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • +1 to the Santini Sirio from Prendas. I got some a while back and they're great. The Roubaix material goes up to chest level, which is a little strange and would make pit-stops more difficult, but I like them. There's also money off at the moment too...

Do you not find the Santini Sirio get a bit warm over the thigh where they overlap with your leg warmers ? I was thinking of buying them for spring and autumn teamed with leg warmers, assos intermediate evo and base layer but am a bit concerned they could be too warm ?

Couldn't get the Santini ones in my size.
ended up buying the Northwave Vertigo winter bibshorts from Evans.
They too come fairly high up the chest but they have a zip which makes impromptu stops less stressful.
The material is warm without overdoing things.

Thanks, but this thread is about winter SHORTS, not the ubiquitous tights, good as they may be.

    Hate to be picky.

+1 on the thinking that if its cold enough to need roubaix - its cold enough for tights.

true - bit weird wanting hot shorts, but no legs.

I find tights just that little bit too warm for all but the coldest few days of the year.
I can wear a warm pair of shorts with legwarmers comfortably far more days of the year than tights.
I was wearing this combination for 9 months of last year-whereas tights I wore for two weeks at most.

at what temp do people start to use bib tights like the DHB ones? I love reading about all the cold weather gear you all use in GB, but not sure whether it gets cold enough here in Melbourne Aust.

I've been using my bib tights thru the winter. The last few weeks its been between zero degrees and 8 degrees. I'd rather be too warm than too cold though - last thing you want is for the weather to change and you're 2 hours away from home.

Was it Sean Yates who used to ride through foul winters in a neoprene shorty wetsuit as a baselayer ?

I have a slightly dodgy knee, which I find is helped by keeping my legs warm, so I'd prefer them to be too warm than too cold. Think they would maybe be borderline too hot in late spring/early autumn though.

I'm sure most will agree the past few days have been TOO WARM for roubaix tights.
And as it happens a bit TOO COLD for lycra shorts(unless you're one of these strange people whose legs start sweating instantly you turn the pedals)

Hence the need for warmer shorts, which have been perfect for these temperatures worn with some legwarmers.

I got the Northwave winter shorts in the end.

    What about bib 3/4?

That's another option I suppose but for me they wouldn't be as versatile a garment as the above as there are a limited number of days in the year when they can be worn.

Plus, they never had them when 'I were a lad' so am not sure they'd be my style.

My Roubaix tights have been too hot this week but shorts too cold.

I've been looking at 3/4 bibknickers in a standard lycra, like the cracking Assos ones, but havent found any to actually try. I dont own legwarmers yet so am wondering if shorts + legwarmers does just as well?

My 3/4s get good use. Gotta keep those knees warm. And great to see the weathers turned in time for the weekend. :-(

I haes a couple of pairs of Assos Roubaix 3/4 - tried to find some Roubaix shorts for the spring but most folks had sold out - will probably try and find some for the cross season.

would people recommend 3/4's in roubaix or simple Lycra? Does having a little of bare lower leg stop you getting too warm with the roubaix?

I prefer mine to be roubaix. I can't honestly recall in 30 years of cycling thinking - if only my legs weren't so hot...
