Planet x SL Pro Carbon Sport with 105

Hi,
i have posted before about purchasing my first racer but ill health and the bad weather have held up a decision.
Just been over to the Planet x website and i can see they have the above bike with a 105 groupset, except for the breaks, for a great price. The ultrega version is £150 more and i am wondering if it's really worth the extra. I cannot imagine weight would differ much especially for a rider of my abject fitness level and i cannot see any posts here questioning the merits of the 105 groupset either.
Not too sure about the tyres though...
Anyway, anyone think i should just pay the extra for the Ultrega? Would there really be a noticeable performance difference?
cheers

I have had 105 and have now got Ultegra, I don't really think you will notice a difference mate. I think the key to keep them running sweet is to keep em tiptop clean...0

Noticeable: yes
Significant: not so sure.
I upgraded from Campagnolo Veloce (kind of equivalent to Shimano 105?) to Ultegra 6700 and I'm happy that I did. Campy was not bad but the smoothness of the Ultegra transmission is worth the extra money.0 -
I would pay the extra every time. This is based on riding the Campag equivalent of 105 and comparing it with my Ultegra. The difference was astounding.
Others may disagree. I've never actually ridden 105 but if the campag equivalent is indeed a like for like then I'd say do it.0 -
I've had 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace - the more you spend - the more durable it is. Thats what I've found so far anyway.0

Hey dboden, what's cooking in the oven?
On the 105 I expect it is their way of knocking out the current range before the new one is released. If its the new Ultegra then its worth it and you get your gear cable routed around the bar and not 'sideways' which is bliss.0 -

Yeh yeh, haha.. its normally a quote about the pink slippers!!

Have an Ultegra equipped Ti Road Pro. Lovely shifting, I also think the hoods are perfect too.+++++++++++++++++++++

It is the new Ultegra and that does look much neater! not sure its a reason to spend £150 more though...
Its good but I can't comment on how good yet as I have not tried the 105 or used this Ultegra for long enough yet.0 -
I would pay the extra if you have the cash. If you don't upgrading will cost loads more than £150 .
I paid an extra £90 for ultegra SL over 105 last year - I would have paid loads more - but it seemed like a good deal.0 -
Thanks for all the replies.
Its the ultrega sl over the 105 for an extra £100 or ultrega 6700 for an extra £200.
Popped into an Evans to look at the cabling issue and i think i understand-certainly looks cleaner around the bar.
thanks again.0 -
An alternate thought. Although there are advantages to the Ultegra as others have mentioned, as you are a 'rider of my abject fitness level' and presumably a beginner, the £150 difference may be better invested in bib-shorts, shoes or other kit (unless you have these things already?). :?Cycling weakly0

I had heard that the braking on the latest Shimano under the bar tape stuff was inferior.0

Braking seems fine to me but the shifting isn't quite as smooth as the old ultegra. still ok mind.
Reckon the comment on accessories is pretty sound though, make sure you've got the right kit to go with it and you're far more likely to actually get out and use it (especially at this time of year).
That having been said i went for the ultegra...Music, beer, sport, repeat...0 -
I have all the accessories from a period of commuting after I returned to cycling but then my bike was stolen.
Ultrega sl it is then.
I did notice all the reviews of the planet x bike seem to be with different tyres to the michellin offered as standard. Should I consider an upgrade on the tyres? Thanks again.0 -
wear them out first.0

Which makes perfect sense, seeing as it was the gear cabling that was exposed on the old version...0 -
trying to buy one of these right now, absolutely no reaction on the web site, simply won`t recognise an order being placed!
Looks to be brilliant value to me though, certainly have`nt seen anything better moneywise ... unless you`re a Ribble fan!0 -
what browser are you using? (sometimes I have to resort to windows explorer), are pop-ups blocked?0

I don't think thats actually such a great deal. (the sl) I paid less than that for the same upgrade last summer - when both groupsets were in date.0 -
alfablue: Thanks but its def. not a browser issue, am using firefox, no pop up blocker and have switched to IE with still no response .... weird ...0

oh dear, try email and phone - don't miss out if you want one.0
