Hello people, I'm taking part in my companies cycle to work scheme and am able to purchase any bike from Halfords for up to £1000. Now, if I'm honest I have little or no knowledge of what to get, I want it for predominantly riding to to work with some off road weekend use. I am a fairly big fella andI have a moderate level of fitness which will hpefully improve through cycling, anyway I realise this is my first post but was just wondering could anybody be so kind to give me any advice at all as to what I should get ??. The Carrera bikes at the moment are 20% off although I am led to believe you cannot look further than a Boardman within the parameters I am set. I don't mind how much the bike costs (within the thousand), as I can afford the easy repayments with work and I want something that is quality and will last. Thanks again for taking the time to read this.

Boardman Team HT mountain bike if you're doing some offroad stuff too. Currently retailing for £850 which will leave you change for helmet/gloves/other bits and bobs. The difference between the Team and the Pro doesn't justify the extra £150.

I'm currently on a similarly specced HT and have used it for everything - commuting, touring, casual offroad stuff, XC racing. You might also want to pick up a pair of slick tyres too?
    Rules are for fools.
  • Cheers for that, really appreciated, seems I get a voucher for £100 worth of accessories as well with a Boardman purchase, so double bonus.
  • The Carrera Fury is regarded as a good buy around the 500 mark, spec wise, from any shop.

A thread in the MTB buying section could be the forward, although they will want more details about what you want the bike to be capable of doing.
