I have a compact crank which is a 50 34 would like to change to 36 and swap every so often. The back of the the 50 chainring says 34 t only is this right see no difference in chainrings.

No, you can use any 110 bcd inner chainring.
Sram have started doing a 36 now.

    However,

I strongly recommend some Stronglight CT2s, I got mine from Spa Cycles, the service was brill (thanks Colin) as are the goods themselves.
  • If you've got an least a 25 sprocket, try 50/38 or 50/42.

TA make a 42 inner chainring for Campagnolo compacts, but they don't make a 42 inner chainring for Shimano compacts.

This one will fit both http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php ... 0s113p1721

Cheaper stronglight ones on the same site too.

50/42??? I wouldn't try that. Changing up/down chainrings is only worth a 2 sprocket rear only change.

I got a cheap Stronglight chainring (5083?) to try 50/36 rather than 50/34 and it didn't work properly with my Shimano R700 cranks. My chain occasionally fell between the two chainrings, leaving me spinning helplessly.

The bevels don't match the ones on Shimano compact inner rings, so you end up with a bigger gap between the chainrings and hey presto

You can use the 36T on your existing 50 T drive, what happens is that the switching zones on drives will not be consistent. Shifting, however, will operate but not as smoothly. There is, SRAM, V4 A 110 mm, 50T, for 36T and SRAM V2 B 50T, 110 mm for 34T

The link is to middle rings not inner. Sure you can use middle rings as an inner, but seems a bit of a bodge to me.
