Anything around Heaton (Newcastle)

After my £36 ebay commuting bike exploded, I decided to replace it with a mountain bike to supplement my 'proper' road bike. I'm living in Newcastle at the moment, and whilst there is plenty of road cycling within easy reach (due to the abundance of roads...) I can't think of anywhere where I might find a bit of mud.

Nearest place I've found by searching around is Chopwell woods, which is sadly around 12 miles away from me - a bit far for an easy visit as I don't have a car. Anything closer to the north east of the city?

There's plenty near Newcastle. Gosforth Park is great fun, Holywell Dene, Jesmond Dene has some fun routes through it, the woods in the middle of Gosforth Golf club (off salters lane) is ace too.
