The Mavics weigh 1770g and if I go for 2009 (and why not) I have seen them for £250. They must be strong enough, as they are standard fit on the Kona Major One top flight cyclocrosser. Is there anything else I should consider before I replace my deeply dished heavy old Alex rims/Tiagra/Deore combo?

Ultegra 6700's are currently only £230 at Merlin Cycles. That's where my money would be going.
  • IRD Aero Niobium or Cadence rims on Ambrosio hubs. £272. Strong and weigh a lot less than the Ksyriums

6700 were as low as 200 at one point

a mate has some. They're nice. They weren't perfectly true at the start but a quick fettle sorted that. I'm looking at getting a pair for the commuter.

How about a set of Hope Pro 3 Mono hubs on Open pros - can be had for about £270 new
  • I bought a pair of Pro-Lite Braccianos a month or so ago and they're great. Got them on offer from velo29 for about £270, but think they're still available for about £300 in a few places. They weigh 1.5kg and are strong and stiff.

the only 1.5kg wheels I have seen on that price point are Reynolds Solitudes. I have decided to go budget this time and got some Shimano RS20s for £110 the pair, wieght about 1.85kg.

That's seriously cheap for the weight. Here's the stuff on the braccianos:

Planet X are doing their Model B wheelset (around 1650 grammes so a bit lighter than the Equipes) for £99 at the moment.

Seem to get favourable reports from majority of owners/users on here so may be worth considering
