Going indexed

Am considering converting the old 531 to indexed gears, but am not willing to spend £100+ on STIs, so was thinking of using Down Tube shifters instead - various places have these at £40 per pair (and get some cheap new brake levers)

I've got a nine speed block at the back - is there any problem with using 10 speed shifters? CRC have the Dura Ace ones at £40 at the moment

Also - can you use Campag shifters on Shimano gears???

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Old skool indexing is fine for mixing and matching block and levers. I've got 1980s DA 7speed shifters and a 10speed block. On the commute I don't bother to change gear but when going into the hills I need that funtionality. You just need to set the limit screws correctly (I use the middle 7 sprockets, you'll need to limit out a cog) and adjust the cable tension to get the correct derailleur throw on change.

When did indexing make the move to being old-skool?

I had a bike with indexed gears once... never seemed to be much of an improvement TBH, though I expect the system's got better since.

Why did it catch on, exactly? :-)
