im looking to get some new faster rolling tyres as my chunky kenda 2.3's feel like hard work on long rides but before i do i have a couple of dumb ass questions
Is there any fitting difference between wire bead and folding tyres....ie. do they fit the rim in the same way?? or is it purely a weight saving thing??
also i know tubeless tyres are designed to be "TUBELESS" but can u run them with inner tubes if u wanted too???
finally which is more likely to make a tyre faster rolling.... thinner tread like 1.95/2.0 as apose to 2.2/2.3 or is it mainly down to tread pattern??
thanks again

1. Folding is lighter, and more expensive, wire heavier and cheaper. neither one is always harder than the other one to get on the rim -it depends on the tyre and rim
2. You can run tubes with tubeless tyres. people with tubeless take spare tubes incase they get a puncture.
3. thinner tyres aren't that much faster rolling, but they are generally lighter, so are quicker for acelarating and climpbing. Tread pattern and compound (how sticky the rubber is - normally 70a/60a/42a- higher is harder, so faster roling and longer lasting but less grippy/lower is more grippy but slower rolling and wears out quicker. some tyres are dual compound, so harder in the center, but softer on the shoulder of the tyre for grippy cornering but fast rolling and long lasting) affect speed most. generally get softer compound and wider upfront, hard compound and thiner rear. i'd recomend dual compound (60a/70a) specialized the captain tyres, 2.2 upfront, 2.0 rear if you want faster tyres. Pump your tyres harder to be faster in the short term.0 -

rolling resistance is a funny thing off road.
Its been proven that theres less resistance in a fat tire run at low pressure than a thin tire. off road which is great as you also gain more grip.
Tread patten plays a big part in a fast rolling tire.0 -

Wide, low pressure tyres would have more grip but be very draggy!
if what you say is true, why aren't xc whipets riding on flat 2.3" tyres?0 -

Off road fatter and lower pressure is quicker

I tested it out myself as it just didnt compute with me but its true
i uses a 1.8 and 2.1 fire xc i also tryed a 1.5 crosscountry and 2.3 speedking.
I know use 2.2 raceking supersonics tubeless at 22/25 psi0 -
hmm fair enough!
Would lke to hear what others think about that though... can't really say i'm convinced!0 -

It just like lighting we all know it comes from the sky to the earth.
When in fact it is the reverse0 -

Bollocks. For him - not for me.
2" width higher than average pressure sauserwinds I'm infinitely more zippy than any lard arse I've had on. They have their place off road and for certain conditions preferable - and more comfortable. But not for teararsing about my xc loop-de-loop.0 -
I suspect there's a continuum between hard smooth surfaces and soft bumpy surfaces. Skinny high pressure tyres will roll quicker on the former, fat lower pressure tyres quicker on the latter. But real surfaces in the course of a ride will shift back and forth a lot between the two so there is never a definitive answer.0

But that's not technically true either is it. Sure the very bright lightning bolt goes upwards, but that's not the start of it is it.
