Spinning

i've heard quite a bit of talk on the merits of "spinning" I'm a very stompy rider and I like geting out of the saddle and pushing a big gear, I do a lot of upper body training at the gym so this also helps.
Whenever I try spinning in a lower gear (middle ring) it feels like my legs are flailing away and I'm not getting anywhere, I don't think I've ever used the granny ring to be fair, I was just wondering what sort of cadence people who "spin" pedal at and if anyones got any tips for how to get a good "spin"
Cheers

I don't mean spining in the sense of spinning like you would do at a class at the gym I mean on the bike by the way.
Would this be better off in the road forum or is it something mountain bikers aim to achieve as well?
