I ordered one 2 days ago, so will tell you when I get in on my bike- will actually end up upgrading my whole groupset in the sales........
  • in the same vein, the 105 chainset on CRC - must be last years or before, is really cheap
    £100 RRP down to £25
    Go for the break
    Create a chaingang
Make sure you don't break your chain

As a a matter of interest - Can you just bang a triple in, instead of a double? Or is it more involved transplant - Do you have to change the front derailleur? Chain? Rear derailleur? Levers? etc etc.

You need specific shifters and front mech at least.............

    Bargain!!

I notice the 105 on CRC is the old Octalink stuff, but wondered if the chainrings would still fit on a HTII crank??

In a similar vein, could you buy this and then remove the inner ring and run as a double?

you could but the two remaining rings would sit further away from the frame and thus shifting might be compromised, plus the Q-factor of the crank arms is wider. Not worth it, for a few quid, in my book.

And in the same vein is there any reason you can`t use a 10 speed compact chainset on a 9 speed bike? There are virtually none now that are described as 9 speed.

Nope. No reason at all, as long as you're a dab hand at setting your gears up and don't mind a bit of noise.

I've got a Centaur compact chainset with my old 9-speed Veloce shifters, front mech and cassette. It works OK, but I find you do have to change up and down a bit sometimes in order to get the chain sitting just right.

It's OK and not too much of a ball-ache, but I'm very much looking forward to having accurate gear shifting on the new steed, when it eventually arrives.

you could flip the stem, lose some spacers, trim the steerer, lose some weight and still leave the bars at the same height...?

I presume bike weight not me weight?
  • The Wiggle offer was a great way of upgrading the Tiagra groupset on my winter bike

First, the triple ultegra sl chainset worked fine as a straight swap with the Tiagra one. It came with the BB as well - I've seen other offers that don't. It does need a 10 speed chain as on the middle ring/outer gear only, there was some very slight rub (on some small raised areas of the big ring). A ten speed chain fixed this - I also found someone else with the same problem and fix.

I then bought a rear SL mech for £45 and a set of brakes for £60, both from CRC.

This has given me a substantial part of the groupset for under £200. I've retained the Tiagra 9 speed cassette and shifters - the shifters aren't hugely different in operation from the Ultegra ones on my main bike and it's a lot of money to gain an extra cog. The SL rear mech has made shifting quite a lot smoother.

The Tiagra front mech works fine but I'll probably change it anyway just to match when I'm feeling flush. Also cheap from CRC.

Now all I need to do is upgrade the frame :)

If upgrading the levers consider also the option of Campag 10 speed. These can be made to work in a Shimano 9 speed set up with a simple mod to the connection with the rear mech (Hubbub method) and are both triple and double compatible. A Shiftmate device will also allow 10 speed cassette to be used, although there really is no need to exceed 9 speed with a triple set up - and the cassettes and chains are much cheaper!
You will save well over 100 grams with the Campag levers and have neater cable routing. They were also available in grey and you might still find these on e-bay.
  • Thanks Tenor - I'll bear that in mind.

I've since found out that the chain rub issue is included as a special note SI-FC00C-001 with the front deraillleur. It says:

"When the chain is in the posiition shown in the illustration, the chain may contact the front chainrings or front deraillieur and generate noise".

The advice if the noise is a problem is to shift up a gear - a narrower chain stopped it altogether in my case.

Should you be using a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette?

  • Wouldn't panic, i'm using 9 speed chain and shifters but got an 8 speed cassette on the back, no drama..........Yet
