Hi, I am a keen mountain biker and ride a Scott Scale...however I would like to purchase my first road bike to improve fitness.

I dont have a huge budget and would like to spend £500 max. So far I am considering a Giant Defy 4, a Trek 1.1 and a Specialized Allez 16. Any thoughts on these and any other models I should check out? All help greatly appreciated.

My use would be weekend rides and potentially commuting a 20 mile trip.

  • All of the bikes you list there are decent bikes. I have last years allez, and its a good solid bike, slightly let down by the not-so-great tyres that came with it.
Looking down the second hand route is probably what I would do.

+1 second hand - I sold a little used Bianchi Via Nirone Veloce for £465, half the original price. Luckily I bought it on cycle to work scheme, so didn't lose out financially. There are a fair number of bargains to be had if you wait and look around.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
  • I am going to be buying it on a cycle scheme hence why i am considering a new bike. Think the Giant Defy 4 may be my primary choice. Just wondered if I had missed any obvious brands / models to look at?
  • Wait until the SRAM Apex groupset comes out later on this year. You might then get a Boardman for around 500!
  • I've got a Trek 1.2 which I picked up second hand for £225 and absolutely love it.

I have a pinarello surprise for sale if youre intersted.
  • Been down to my local store today where I saw an Orbea T23 Aqua for £549 and this now may be my preference ahead of the Defy 4. Anyone got one of these or got any opinions on it over the Giant?

I don't know if you could stretch to it and what frame size you need but there's a Cannondale Caad 9 2009 Liquigas road bike on the Bay of E atm and he's open to offers. If I had seen that yesterday I would have had it. A blumen bargain to be had there I reckon.
