A guide to making a reasonable imitaiton of a mucky nutz bender fender, for under a pound! :
Time: up to 15 mins, probably less.
Equipment/materials:
5 Zipties (string works too) zip ties available cheap here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/100-black-cable-Z ... 563982ac23
Sharp scissors
Hole punch
Empty 2 litre plastic bottle (like this: http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/i ... 5647659143) you may need several if it's your first time, in case you screw up
Cost: 50p, if you already have scissors and a hole punch, (zipties a pound for a hundred of ebay, so 5p for 5 zip ties and 45p for the bottle in my link)
Peel off the label and cut out the main bit of bottle so you don't have any of the curved parts left, as shown in the diagram. Then with the rectangle you have left, hold it against your fork brace and cut down the width so that the bottle reaches just below where the fork brace and the lowers meet on both sides without rubbing against the tyre, then cut the edge that will be attached to the fork brace curved so the mudguard points down (as shown), then use a hole punch to cut evenly spaced holes in the bottle as shown in the diagram:
Then use the string or zipties to attach the remaining piece of plastic to your fork crown, and then cut down the plastic until it is clear of your frame (make sure it doesn't hit the frame or fork crown when the fork is compressed) and doesn't rub against the tyre.
I used string as we didn't have any zipties, but i'll be getting some zipties soon as the string doesn't look as good, and a sainsbury's caledion sparkling water (those green ones) bottle on rockshox recon race 09 forks, which worked for me.
This helps keep your face and stanchions crud free, and there is virtually no build up of cr@p on the mudguard. Good luck with making yours!

Considering the Mucky Nutz is only £7......
I will do this - thanks james
And benj, to some people £7 is quite abit (ie. me)0 -
I upload some tomorow. It is very secure- doesn't bash into the tyre over bumps etc., and it only has string at the moment, so should be even better with zipties. The bender fender is cheap, but it's much quicker to make this than wait for a bender fender to arrive, and you could almost buy some lockon superstar grips with the money you save (which is what i'm going to do)0

You could probably make something better than a Bender Fender this way. I just can't be ***ed franklyUncompromising extremist0

Reminds of when Brant Richards (I think it was he) did something similar on the down tube, inspiring the Crud Catcher.0

It's like blue peter this....I've been saving up bog roll tubes for the last month....when are we doing Tracy Island?0
-
I don't think Blue peter are allowed to use loo rolls any more!
Can you guess why?
Of course! health and safety ruining everyones fun! they think that people cr@p on their toilet rolls then give them to kids to make somthing they saw on bluepeter.0 -

Bottle plastic is very brittle so wont take a crash too well, one of my mucky nutz fenders went into my tyre and ripped off, proper mudguards have never given me any problems in the 10 years i have used them!
It is a nice guide though. I could put up another template if people want a slightly better looking guard.

The plastic coke bottles are made out of isn't brittle at all :?Uncompromising extremist0

yeh it's actually really flexible, and fizzy drinks bottles are even stronger and stretchier/more flexible as they are designed to take the pressure0

Thanks. It'll be better when i put zip ties on, but it's good enough for now0

If you rounded the edges a little more it would make a very convincing Mucky Nutz, the moment I saw the official one my head thought of what you have done there (If only I rode with suspension  ). Not a bad job at all there mate.0
-
or get some velcro cable ties and then it would fit just like the real thing
something like this....

Thanks - serves you right for not having sus
I didn't want to cut it down too much - it was a bit too small as it was, so i didn't round the edges0 -
Tried this myself although yet to put it to the test in crap weather. (Dry in Scotland?! What on earth is happening...) Wonder if it'll be any better than my botched inner-tube neoguard. At least it looks a bit better (replace 'better' with 'less awful')0
