Hi, i need to replace the wheels on my road bike, trek 1200SL, the rear has got a few cracks in it (click link to pics). My riding at the moment is purely to get fit, no racing or even club runs for the moment. my budget is not very big and i stumbled across a mavic aksium wheelset that is within my budget of £150tops,
Anybody give there opinion on this wheelset or suggest another wheelset instead?

Try the Shimano RS20s from Merlin for about £100....http://www.georgesfoundation.org

Check out Pro-Lite Lucianos on ribble 120 quid, shimano rs20 100 quid on ebay, rs30 150 on eBay, fulcrum racing 7 100 quid anywhere. There are hundreds of different wheelsets in this price area (I'm also looking at buying some of this price). The differences between them when you're riding is minimal IMO so just go for the ones that you think look best! Just seen rs20s in the flesh, look really nice, but I'm swaying towards the lucianos as they're nice deep section, light, and handbuilt.0

Just my opinion/experience but I'd take Aksiums over Racing 7s. I have a set of both and while the Mavics have been virtually bombproof the Fulcrums have been an annoyance.
Perhaps you might be able to find a set of Racing 5/Racing 5 Evolutions for around that mark. I've been told they have more in common with Fulcrum's higher-end wheels and my Racing 3s have been great.
I'm currently looking at buying a CAAD9 Ultegra but the sticking point is it comes with yet more Racing 7s (on a £1,600 bike).0 -
Planet X Model B's are a very popular wheelset within your price bracket and may be one's to consider.

I got a set of Askiums free when my R-sys went in for upgrade, and although I have long since sold the R-sys, the Askiums are a keeper!
I used them initially as a wheel for my turbo bike, then onto the rollers, and now used on the road for winter riding, and they are totally bombproof, fairly quick considering the price, and all round a good fit and forget wheelset.Complicating matters since 19650 -

+1, used on my commuter/winter bike, taken loads of hammer over the pot holes of south manchester in the last 2 years and stayed true in all that time. Like DaSy says, always seem reasonably quick given the weight and price.
I can't comment on the others mentioned but for a robust fit and forget, you can't go far wrong with these.0 -
Couple of lads in my club have had Aksiums crack - I think at the flange - though personally I've always found Mavic factory built wheels pretty robust and all the other posters here seem positive.
it's a hard life if you don't weaken.0 -
Mine have been fine. Only used for commuting and winter training rides, but do the trick.0

Yep use Askiums on rollers and winter, great reliable wheelset at a good price if you hunt about, seem to have gone up signifcantly, recently....Colnago C60 SRAM eTap, Colnago C40, Milani 107E, BMC Pro Machine, Trek Madone, Viner Gladius,
Bizango 29er0 -
+1 have got in about 60,000km on mine, use them for training, and the occasional crit. get at least 40-80km on 'gravel roads' every week, and they are still true-ish... im sure they'd survive a nuclear war(along with cockroaches) only downside i can find is they are a tad heavy!!0

hmm some good points on the aksiums, think i will start saving for them, (im only a poor student)
I did email about the model b's and got told to put in massive letters NINE SPEED COMPATIBLE IF NOT CANCEL ORDER
on account of they told me that the yget a mixture of 9-10spd ones.
i do like the look of the model b's and they are about the same price,
am hearing too many different things about the shimano rs20's so they are off my list.My Rides:

If you shop about you may be able to get a set for £100-£120. Merlin Cycles usually have good deals on wheels.0
