McEwen won yesterday. Old dog Freire got the better of Greipel on today's race.

The race has an overall but riders can sit out stages as they wish.

Oscar Periero? Were you thinking of him? Got his Astana contract sorted out though so didn't retire.

I think Freire's calling it quits at the end of this season.

    I'm confused now

I do remember now Pereiro deciding to jack it in because he couldn't find his legs post the crash

Yep, Freire is postponing his retirement - what is good because is a type of cyclist we definitely lack in Spain.

    What type is that? Sprinter?

yes, he has also done pretty well at the classics in the past. In Spain for the general public is all about stage racing, cycling fans is a different kettle of fish but your average joe only know about the Giro, Tour and Vuelta.

Finally another Spanish rider to take from where Contador left it.

Not many spanish young cyclists coming through the pro-ranks at the moment.

Maybe because the weather in Mallorca is rubbish.... 135 riders were DNF or outside the time limit.

You might be surprised but that question was covered by Spanish sports and cycling papers a while ago and most came to the same conclusion...

3 José Iván Gutiérrez (Spa) Caisse d'Epargne 0:00:07
    4 Aitor Pérez (Spa) Footon-Servetto
5 José Joaquin Rojas (Spa) Caisse d'Epargne
6 Kim Kirchen (Lux) Team Katusha
7 Beñat Intxausti (Spa) Euskaltel - Euskadi

And Greipel wins the final race in Palma Nova:

    1 André Greipel (Ger) HTC-Columbia 4:13:17
    2 Koldo Fernández (Spa) Euskaltel-Euskadi
    3 Manuel Cardoso (Por) Footon-Servetto
4 José Joaquin Rojas (Spa) Caisse d'Epargne
5 Jens Keukeleire (Bel) Cofidis, Le Credit en Ligne
6 Fabian Wegmann (Ger) Team Milram
7 Jonas Jorgensen (Den) Saxo Bank
    8 Andreas Schillinger (Ger) Netapp
    9 Rubén Pérez (Spa) Euskaltel-Euskadi
10 Eduard Vorganov (Rus) Team Katusha

Second top ten placing of the week for 22 year old Jens Keukeleire. Not bad going for your first week as a professional cyclist.
