M6 Toll

It's going to get EVEN more expensive, up to a fiver for a car. It was £2 when it opened in 2003. £4.70 at the moment. I use it when I go up to Cannock, only because my dad's got a tag that I can borrow, so I end up not paying for it.
But is anyone surprised they're struggling to get enough people on it, when using it for both legs of your commute would add £50 a week to your travel costs?

I use it to head for Cannock, but only when we've got three or four in the car, otherwise it just doesn't seem like value for money.Northwind wrote: It's like I covered it in superglue and rode it through ebay.0

Isn't there an alternate route, albeit longer, that avoids the toll? If so, I'll continue to use that as that is just ludicrous.
Out of curiosity, what would happen if you go to the toll booth and refused to pay? they can hardly turn you roundIt takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

That's what happens on the Severn bridge. Same if you forget you need to pay cash.0 -

On the bridge they shut every gate so about 100 cars stare at you and call you a wanker in unison and they escort you along a little road and back whence you came. Happened to a cock I used to work with. Was sent to Bizzle to collect a tiny little hatchback based van, had about £6 in cash on him (toll is £5.10 for cars) and they refused him as it's double for commerical vehicles.
M6 toll is only a posh persons route anyway isn't it? not like they closed the normal M6 is it? although they could be clearer on the signs which way is the 'free' way.0 -
I drive on it fairly often, but still managed to accidentally end up on it once, which was a pain.
It is full of posh people by the looks of it, my 106 looks out of place amongst all the Range Rovers and Jaaaags.
M6 is still open, but it's a PITA to use on Saturday mornings (everyone heading into brum) and Saturday evenings at 5ish (everyone heading out of brum), unfortunately that's the times that I tend to use it.
The Toll at 9-10am on the other hand is an absolute joy. I didn't see a single car going the same way as me once!0 -
i use it every time i travel up north to either my folks in north wales or my birds folks in merseyside. i find the cost is worth it0
-
I've not been on it for a while ! But if they put average speed cam's on it that's when I'll stop using it
When i have used it i just considered the toll as a kinda fun tax as I've never seen a cop or speed cam on it and virtually no traffic =fun fun fun0 -

Only idiots use the M6 Toll0

We used it on the bikes on our way down south, it was ace, like the ultimate traffic light GP Seems to me that if you're paying for it, you should be allowed to completely ignore all speed limits, right?Uncompromising extremist0

I use the M6 Toll practically every day as I need to commute from Manchester to Atherstone, until I can relocate to the midlands. I reckon it must shave 30 mins of my journey if I had to follow the M6, particularly with all the roadworks (AGAIN), or A5. At least I get to claim the cost back on expenses though.
Oh and you might want to keep an eye out for the black BMW 5 Series with the flashing lights as I regularly see people pulled over on the Toll by the police.___________________________

I drive down the M6 every morning from Stafford and it's rare that a lorry or van of any description takes the Toll Road. Been on it a few times but I feel conspicuous on my own in the inside lane :twisted:0
-
The toll price really is ridiculous but I use it if I've been working down south cos after 2-3 hours of motorway from Kent, the last thing I want is to stop to a crawl round Birmingham and take a further 1.5 hours to do the last 30miles home! Does help that we can claim it back though!
They really need to make some improvements around the M5-M6 junction coming North though, hit that at a bad time and it's insane!0 -
Damn....
I misread the title and was disappointed not to be hearing about billy goats gruff
Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

I just use the M1 and avoid the M6 altogether.
M6 is a total PITA to use. I try to avoid at all costs. Distance is a bit longer on the M1 but I've yet to be held up. The A1 and A1M are even nicer. Like driving was back in the 70s (not that I'm THAT old).Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.
