Front Mech for Hybrid

Can anyone recommend a front mech for a Boardman hybrid which has been fitted with a Stronglight 28/38/48 chainset. It's got an XT M771 fitted at present (non standard) and this needs a minimum 12 tooth difference between intermediate and outer ring, according to Shimano. This means that the deep inner cage plate hits the intermediate ring and jams up. If I increase the clearance between outer cage plate and big ring from the recommended 2mm to 6/7 mm, I can avoid this, but changing is poor. Obviously, I need a different front mech but not sure which - any suggestions please?

Cheers

Jon

what left shifter does it run?

if it's a mtb rapidfire-type then you'll need a mtb mech, and you're limited in that respect as only the XT one you suggest is suitable for big rings AFAIK.

You could try and get hold of an older style mtb mech with the more road-like cages...

or you could always junk the 38t ring for a smaller one....?

or you could junk the triple for a compact...?

then your shifting choices are much wider as you can setup road mechs to run with mtb shifters when you only have two rings.

  • Thanks Maddog,

It's running SRAM x9 shifters. I had considered a smaller middle ring to make it work, but as a roadie, I'd prefer to go the other way if anything. Thought about the compact as well (which I think is what it originally came with) Most of the running gear has been upgraded by the previous owner, so he may still have this.
