SKS mudguards - 35mm or 45mm

My old SKS mudguard came off yesterday on a ride - it had snapped completely in two by the brake bridge - and it was only 9 years old.
Getting a new set and theres a choice on widths - 35mm to use up to 28mm tyres - which I do on the back, but theres a 45mm width for bigger tyres. Now I know I've had rides where the guards have got so cacked up with mud that I've had to stop and wash them out - so would a wider mudguard be a better idea ? It is only for the winter fixed wheel - so I'm not worried about aerodynamics - just like to have allow for the mud that we get round here.
Cheers !

The deciding point may be whether or not, assuming you're using caliper brakes, the caliper arms can wrap around the increased width of the mudguard. I don't know the answer to that so can't be more helpful. LOL- your SKS's broke after 9 years- I'm finally buying a new set after rear one has broken (and been repaired) 4 times with another crack half way across! This after 3 years.0

Thats a good point ! I'll measure it tonight. I suppose i could always cut out some of the guard but it'd be better to get the guard size right first time. Ta.0
