Recently, the public were invited to give their opinions on proposed cycling scheme across Dorset.

What I can't understand is responses like this one:

"Have all the routes go along the pier and right off the end,so we can get rid of all the wally brain numptys on bikes for once andfor all, as they are nothing more than danger to themselves and to otherroad users, as they don't seem to have read the highway code at all andseem to think red traffic lights do not mean anything to them, as oneway signs are ignored and they wonder why the car drivers are fed up tothe back teeth with all bike riders, give me a gun then line them upagainst a wall and I will be more than happy to shoot everyone of them Have a nice day Steve SWPSTEVE@aol.com"

If this was aimed at a group based on religion or skin colour he'd be getting a visit from the police!

  • Nice of him to include his email address though.

I think he needs more porn in his life*.

*Not that I am endorsing signing his email up for porn websites or adding it to well known trawling guestbooks or anything like that. That would be wrong.
  • Sadly he isn't a one off and I must admit there are plenty of poeple riding bikes who give us "cyclists" a bad name! :(
Trek Emonda and Kiron Scandium on the road and Cube ltd Team for the rest .Also a retired Holdsworth Professional. Love Cycling!!

If that SWP signifies membership of the socialist shirkers party then i'm not surprised. I remember from my days as a lefty activist that SWP members were either extremely posh or thick as sh*t neanderthals.

    You are totally right!

I found Dorset and Cornwall really unfriendly towards cyclists when I did ride with Sustrans in 2004. Really nasty attitudes, even an anti-cycling demo. And they don't like the clothes we were, apparently!

Any cyclists from Dorest here? Do you feel harrassed?

A real shame, as I love Dorset, particularly around Bridport. I haven't managed to get my bike down there yet, but it looks like superb cycling country with all those country lanes, hills and other assorted scenery. Mind you I did once overhear a weird reactionary teashop owner launching into a rant to another customer about how cashback was, "...your own money, you know. It comes out of your account; it's not free!" I think he then wandered onto the subject of "immigrants" and how none of the locals were actually locals, but all people who had moved in to the area (all the while speaking in a strong London accent). I can't find a suitable emoticon. It seems he may have been more typical than we thought at the time.

I like Dorset. Particualrly Dorchester with the little museums. The countryside out there is quite nice too. :)

the only place I've cycled where the locals are friendly is Suffolk. Everywhere else they usually try to kill you.

The cornish are just weird, as are the locals from the villages in south Devon

Have never cycled there myself, perhaps thats it. I've been there a few times as a general "tourist" you might say. But as a place I do like the county, reminds me of Hampshire for some reason.

I've started spending a week cycling around there annually as it's such a pleasure.

This year I'll be there at end of July/ beginning of August.

The Cornish are just weird no matter what  Mind you have to watch that lot from Plymouth as well

South Devon on the whole isn't bad, always get a nice welcome in Dartmouth, Totnes and Kingsbridge as a cyclist. Torquay on the other hand, they just want to kill you!

The north devon section of the C2C is very unwelcoming to cyclists however once you get to Okehampton things to get better. :D

Exeter, generally amblivlent towards cyclists, it does actually help that our MP is very well known for cycling. We do however get the occassional pratt.

I haven't cycled in Devon since the late 80s. I do remember seeing quite a few weirdos in the outlying villages though - no actual aggression but some extremely surreal encounters that just left me bemused. Used to be amused seeing the hopeless rural punks hanging out on the village green - often on their own. It took till 84/85 for punk to reach the south devon villages.

Cycling in Plymouth was fine back then - more carelessness from drivers than hostility. I'd be surprised if it's the same now.

In cornwall anyone who's from more than about 2 miles away is foreigner and not to be trusted - i didn't take their hostility too seriously - but now knowing how many people have moved down there from Essex and Kent I wouldn;t be surprised to encounter outright aggression these days.

Hoping to have a week down there with my bike in April/ May this year though.

You'll be pleased to hear nothing has changed in Cornwall, your still a foreigner if your from the next village

One of the funniest lines I heard was in a pub in Torcross to Jake, one of the locals picked up on the fact that he wasn't exactly a local and asked 'You're not from around there here parts are you?' Jake: 'Well, I was born in Plymouth, but live in Dartmouth when not on deployment' Local: 'Arrrggghhh, I didn't think you were from around these here parts'

Dartmouth is five miles away from Torcross!

What's the difference - if they're riding a bike they are as much a cyclist as you.
