I transferred a section of a map onto my Garmin a couple of weeks back from Map Source (loaded on to computer from dvd) which worked successfully and I can see on my Edge that section of map in detail (and of course in bottom left hand corner it denotes when it is 'mapsource' or basemap' and when you go into Settings - Map - you can then tick or untick 'CN Europe NT 2010.10'. However, I have now tranferred the whole of europe onto an SD card, and placed it in the Garmin, which it isnt reading (only the original map i transferred covering a county.) How do I set my Garmin to read off the SD card?

have you still got maps loaded on the internat memory, if so I would try and remove that

Also what size and spec is the memory card, until a recent firmware update the garmin 705 wouldnt pick up the larger cards (think 4gb+ if my memory is correct)

+1 on the first bit, I have a feeling it only recognises one gmappsupp.img at a time and probably the internal before the SD card, +1 on the second bit, you've got to have at least firmware 2.9 (they are up to 3.1) for it to recognise larger memory cards, I tested an 8gb one in mine and it worked fine. Might do bigger, just haven't got bigger (ooer).
  • That's it - I had to delete the map i had moved onto it originally from Map Source, for it to then recognise the SD Card. It's a 2GB with Europe on so not too big. I was a little baffled I think in my numbnut way that if you scanned over france for example from more than 12m it would only read from 'basemap' but then when you zoomed in, it then read the 'mapsource map'.
    thanks guys!

it will pick up two maps, one on SD and one on internal.

I have topo on my SD, and city Nav on the internal memory. (Turn them on and off as required in Menu > Settings > Maps, tick boxes at the bottom)

Thought it may be conflicting if you had the same map on both, but only a small part on the internal (which as mentioned above problably has preference)

Glad it fixed the issue :)
