First Road bike and I love it. Would ultimately keep this as a winter bike and upgrade when my legs can justify it.

Nice! Hope you ride the hell out of it.
Good OCP shot too.0 -

Nope, seem to be fine, although being my first road bike I have nothng to really compare them too.
I'm 85kg though, so hardly a lightweight road wippet. Have had the bike about a year too, I got it when the '09s were released and have covered a fair few miles on it.
What specifically went wrong with yours?0 -
Sounds like yours are all fine. What happened was the spokes kept breaking, they broke about four times in 1 year, that doesn't include winter. But seems like yours are goodRibble Gran Fondo

Very, very nice bike. Like the colors.0

Friend of mine has the same bike with white bar tape and used it for the first time in June last year on the Wales Dragon. He loves his.0

I've got the same bike, absolutely love it!! Though I've still got the standard (albeit very dirty) white bar tape.
Was thinking of blinging it up a little with red bar tape and hoods.0 -
Nice paint work!0
-
I've got one too!
The wheels have gone out of true a couple of times (low spoke count to blame I think)
and the white tape is looking grimy, but I love it and have put a good few miles on mine.0 -
This is still going strong - although probably about to be usurped and 'downgraded' to rainy-day duties.
Currently rolling on Michelin Pro Race 3s (probably about 1,000 miles old). Saddle's now a stripped Selle Italia SLR, it has carbon Planet X skewers on it and carbon look Keos.
The seats also 10mm higher now and the stem has been gradually dropped and now sits bang on top of the headset and the steerer has been cut. Weight is now 8,860g which for the outlay and considering it's 105 and has 2.2kg of wheels isn't bad at all.
Long term (3 year) test summary:
Durability: I've had 1 rear spoke break.
VFM: Massive
Trek get bashed, but although this bike is far from being fashionable, my experience of it has proved it to be a dependable and robust entry to road cycling. I could stick a set of e.g. Ksyrium Elites on it which would make it high 7.xxkgs and probably ride it for another 3 years without issue.0 -

Absolutely - Treks seem to get a hard time from many on BR and some detractors who've never ridden a Trek. I guess its the Lance Armstrong connection and/or being American but I could be wrong
I am on my second Madone 5.9 the first being a 2005 upgraded with Ultegra 6700 which after my Boardman was a revelation being so light (7.2kg). I renewed my bike a few weeks ago and after test riding a Colnago CLX 3.0, Pinarello Rokh and Quattro and a Cube litening Pro the 2012 Trek 5.9 was my choice. It is so light although with Di2 it is 0.2 kg heavier than my old bike, stiff enough under power and on the hills to react to acceleration yet flexible enough to soak up the bumps in the road. The fit is great for me and I find it so comfortable over 50+ mile rides.
Enjoy your ride and I look forward to the OCP pic being posted.Trek Madone 5.9
Kinesis Crosslight T40 -
interesting that you have a Kinesis too. I'm contemplating a KR810 to build up to replace this.
I'm in Sussex near Partridge Green and enjoying the current success of Kinesis and Morvelo / Dark Star tie in.0 -
I really like my Kinesis Crosslight. Great ride and used for off road/towpath type routes or for popping to the local shops for bits and pieces. Well put together. Cant comment on the race light model as I haven't had the pleasure up close but certainly looks very nice. I certainly would recommend Kinesis from my experience in terms of build quality.
Very different set up, naturally, to the Trek road bike so would be one for me where I would like to get a test ride of the frame to see how it felt.Trek Madone 5.9

Well I bought a used Kinesis KR-810 frame on ebay. I bought the wrong size though so need to sell it on. If anyone wants an unmarked size 54 (like a traditional 58 I've found out..) drop me a PM.
In the meantime I've been enjoying the Trek. I've since fitted black Deda tape with carbon plugs. Weight has dropped massively to 8840g.
OCP pic as promised (although not a great one, the garage was in shadow):
On Monday I'm off to Strada, who are local to me to try out some new wheels for it. Should hopefully get into the 7***g area. Frame wise, I'm now erring more towards a Supersix than a Kinesis.0 -
Nice bike, I would say that as I have the same years Trek 1.5 (same paint scheme but mine is white and lime green) and apart from the front wheel breaking beyond repair I have had absolutely no problems with it. Any other parts I've changed has been purely down to preference/comfort rather than need. I think mine is the same basic bike but has a mix of Tiagra and 105 and FSA cranks, instead of full 105.0
-
@ ste. Did you upgrade the wheels?Trek Madone 5.9
Kinesis Crosslight T40 -
Trek_dan - I think the 1.1 - 1.5 have the same frame but the 1.7 and 1.9 share a different frame. I'm not sure if the difference is grade of alu or geometry though. I don't doubt they're very similar bikes though - my brother has the 1.5 and it certainly seems similar. Trek have differentiated them more now by renaming the 1.7 and 1.9 as 2.1 and 2.2 respectively. At least that's how I understand it.
ALaPlage - not yet, going to talk to Strada on Monday and try some different options.0 -
Phoned Strada Monday morning and left a message on their answerphone. Cycled over there later and nobody seemed to be there and tried to ring them again. Still waiting to have my call returned.
Anyway - I drove over to the Evans warehouse at Gatwick, did some cunning price-matching and ended up buying a set of Mavic R-Sys SLRs.
Very pleased with them, they've completely transformed the bike. For now I've swapped my 105 cassette over but will fit a Dura-Ace 7900 or XG 1090 SRAM Red in due course. Will then work through the groupset upgrading that too as things come up at the right prices.0 -
Looking very classy. Have you weighed your lil beauty with those new wheels?Trek Madone 5.9
Kinesis Crosslight T40 -
Cheers. Did a quick 50 miler on the new wheels today and I'm loving them.
Weight is now 8,070g. More to come though...0
