After being biten by the cycling bug hard I have decided to start racing this year. Il be doing some crits on my current bike which is an alu orbea with 105.

However I want to do some road stages to and as such would like to use a better bike that I can race these on and use for the summer. After looking around there are so many to choose from and a lot come with ultegra and the problem I have with that is that crankset is so god damn ugly. I have rode a friends bike with sram red and I loved every minute of it. However not many bikes come with sram as standard on a bike around this price.

I have seen this focus izalco on wiggle that comes with a sram force groupset and although the wheels are bad I would probably invest in a new set next year just to race on. The only problem I see is that it is a team milram replica. This presents a problem to me because I want to race on it. I know there are rules on the use of sponsorship on clothing and I have looked on BC but can't find anything on the use of sponsorship on bikes. Would I be able to get away with covering over the labels? Im not looking at getting the bike to look good I just think it is a good spec for the money.

Your comments would be much appreciated.

p.s please don't tell me to get a planet x, i really hate the look of them and I would never be happy if I bought one

So you don't want a bike that looks good, but you won't get a Planet X because it doesn't look good?!?

You could always get a Boardman with Sram Force, not badly priced at £1600 and then you would have a bit left to spend on something else, I think that is probably what I would do.

£2000 can buy a lot of bike and gives plenty of options. Have a look around for a discounted frame, go online and buy the SRAM groupset, bars, seatpost, saddle, etc of your choice and build it. It won't be any cheaper than buying an off the peg bike but it will be a 'good looker' (hopefully) and it will be customised to your taste and requirements. With £2000, thats what I would do!!!

Clothing and equipment for BC races are separate issues. You can ride what you like but the shorts and jersies DO have rules applied re sponsors : slightly strange as, say you can wear a pair of shorts with a big ASSOS emblazened down the leg without issue but you shouldn't wear a pair of pro-team shorts. I doubt for many races that you'd be pulled up if the shorts were mainly blank or blue and matched your club jersey.

The Milram Focus I guess is more a replica in it's colourways than having Milram all over it ? Doesn't matter anyway, there is no issue racing it.

Well it has got "powered by sram" on the chain stays. "Team Milram" on the top tube and other team sponsors on the seat stays.

So I could ride any bike I wanted even if it is was covered in sponsors aslong as im wearing my cycling club kit?

The boardman isn't a bad call if like the way they look. If you could spend a bit over the 2k you could get some Gigantex 50mm tubulars to go with it too.

Sounds like a good idea. With the upgraded wheel it would probably be down near the UCI limit of 6.8 kgs aswell. Might have to nip into halfords for a test ride
