General Maintenance

Hi,
I've recently purchased my first road bike, a Trek 1.7, and I'm currently treating it with more care than a first born child - it gets dried off if wet, any marks wiped off imediately and it lives in my dining room all to the annoyance of my better half. I fell in moving traffic shortly after getting it (took the wrong foot out) and the terror hurtling through my mind was not because I was scared of getting myself squashed but because I was terrified I would scratch my bike!!!
Now I've always been rather less caring with my mountain bike and my maintenance regime rather simple - it's hosed off if dirty, get's the chain and mecahnisms lubricated every month or so and is serviced once every other year (provided nothing specific has gone wrong).
My question is what should be my regular maintenance regime for my road bike? What lubricants and cleaners should I be using? And, how often should I get it serviced?
Cheers

Servicing really depends on wear
Cleaning does help components last longer
but its better to ride than spend time cleaning
I clean once a month or 2.
Generally just before a club run, if it looks muddy :P
If the bike is wet + muddy when i get back + hosepipe is out, I do give it a quick squirt - but i don't really call a rince a proper clean.
You'll have to clean the bike more if you keep it inside
Spliting the chain, makes it alot easier to do a thourgh clean.

On the subject of this... My mtbs regularly get a good old jet washing. Since bikes are made out of the same stuff whether it be for road or off road use then surely they can both handle this treatment? Perhaps the sealing on the hubs will be better on mtbs for obvious reasons but apart from that....what can go wrong really?0
