Larger riders

One of my friends is looking into getting a bike and I know there are loads of threads on here about bike choices for larger riders, I am it appears, rubbish at the search button and have been trying to find them for 15 minutes! Can anyone point me to the right threads?

What's large?
I was 17 1/2 stone when I got my Rockhopper a few weeks ago.
It was fine for my weight but having said that, now I'm riding, the weight is melting off me!!!

Now to diet, get fit and lose at least 3 stone!!! (2 of the 3 stone now lost...)
Diet started 1/1/20100 -
I've not asked him his exact weight but he's well over 20 I would think, he wants it mainly to commute with but also a bit of light off road riding like tow paths, the sea wall etc.

but I can't help thinking it might be a bit pants for any off road riding and the tyres are pretty thin. I was thinking more along the lines of a Hoss like supersonic said with semi slicks.
I know there was a uy on here who has got a big thread about losing weight and what bikes and cmponents are best etc, I just can't seem to find it anywhere!0
