Can get Kenda 2.35s on a 09 Ex 5.5 (and 8, but the 5.5 is similar design to 6.5). There's not massive amounts of clearance though, so you might want to go a bit skinnier if there's a lot of mud.
Wider tyres have a larger contact patch with the ground, so there is more grip. Assuming everything else remains the same that is (tread, compound etc)0 -
Not a direct answer to your question, but got a high roller 2.35 on my EX80

mate has just got a 6 too.
put a conti vertical 2.35 on and the width is fine but when in full compression the cross over cable run at the back catches on the side nobbles.
this could just be badly set up from the shop though but i would be carefull for that too0
