I finally jumped down off the tall fence and tonight ordered a Recon Race OE from Wiggle for £147! Supersonic will be so relieved...

Given it is OE, I am not expecting it to come with a pump. Any suggestions, please?

Any with a high pressure gauge. I use a Topeak similar to this:

Though measure the sag you want, and remember the pressure.

Rock shocks one is spot on, Rugged and robust

They all generally do the same job, the only difference I find with the cheaper ones is the dumping valve can be clunky and pumping up isnt exaclty fluid
  • yay... I got a free one with my rev's :P

I had this dliemma just last night. I borrowed a Topeak pump off a mate. It worked a treat and seems good quality. However they cost about £27.

There's a favourable review of the Beto pump on BikeRadar and they're less than 15 quid on eBay. I bought one 8)

i use a specialized wind pipe, which is pretty decent, use it on my tyres too, although it does take a bit of pumping, but no more than any mini pump i suppose.
    Fancy a brew?
  • Thanks for the input so far. I had a feeling Topeak would be mentioned, as they are rated highly in the *cough*road section...

I only discovered this after buying a Blackburn floor pump that developed a non-return valve fault when I breathed on it for the second time (still need to contact Ribble ~2 years on, rather than making do with my old Acor that has thread damage between its base and the air chamber) and a "leftfield" Cyclair Plus portable (rip cord inflation).

Anyways, I'm rambling again! Is the Topeak Pocket Shock DXG worth paying the little extra for, due to the marketing spiel of 300PSI and a nicer pressure release mechanism?

Are these pumps fragile enough to warrant getting a hardcase, like the one available for the DXG?

It depends what you buy and whether its staying at home or joining you on the trails

The main concern is breaking the gauge but alot of the better pumps out there have a heavy duty rubber armour round them which helps alot

I bought a no named shock with my mongoose, and whilst its not very fluid, it doesnt leak and it does the job, but whenever I take it on rides I Convince myself im gonna come off and break it, but that hasnt happened yet

Following on from this thread, if you have got Dual Air forks, I guess you want something with reasonable precision to help with setting the positive and negative chambers with respect to each other. Will you get this with the simpler ones, like this one from Bikehut:
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_228852

    Or this one: http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/mountain- ... -pump.html

    Or finally: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=7355

I see there are expensive ones with dual ranges for forks and shocks – are those a better bet or is it just a bit more faffing about?

  • up until last week i had a topeak master blaster shock pump, Great bit of kit, had a small pressure guage in it and was very slim, dont seem to be able to get them any more, was about £20 if memory serves me correct?? so am doing the same a looking, the raleigh/RS one looks the same (guessing the generic ones with a red pressure head are copy's of the RS version) as many on ebay that seem to go for about a tenner,
pita nipping down the lbs to pump them up or check the pressure!

  • My Recons arrived today... they look and feel lovely! :D

From what I've seen so far, I'm swayed by the DXG and the hardcase. I have a bit of time, as I need to book the Saracen in with Hargroves for the fork fitting and get my free post-sale service on the Tricross.

The Beto one is very good. It turns up under different names too, that £20 Raleigh one from Merlin is one of theirs. It makes the Rockshox one I got with my Toras look completely **** tbh.

  • Given the weekend sales at wiggle, it looks like a DXG is going to be ordered, along with a MTB home trainer tyre and a pedal spanner, to take the order over 50 squids and qualify for the 10 squid discount.
