Inspired by this thread, http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12676011 I went and ordered a Chinese light from eBay, an Akoray Cree Q5, apparently kicks out 230 lumen so I did a quick test, afraid its not a very comprehensive range of lights or even marginally exciting...

I'm now uncertain if the Hope on the handlebars and Q5 on the helmet is going to be enough for some night trail riding, wrong forum to ask on mind!

Have a wander over to the MTB section and find the ongoing threads about lights. Most people are raving about the MagicShine from www.DealExtreme.com.
I have the MTE P7 torch with a claimed output of 900 lumens (same as the MagicShine) but only between 1 and 1.5 hour run time on high although it comes with 2 batteries. I'm looking to get another to have one on the bars and one helmet mounted.

  • I have two of those Akoray lights, but only really use one of them (I keep the other as a spare). They are so well built and well designed it's untrue. I hope you bought the 14500 batteries and charger - with AAs they are still bright, but with the 3.7V Lithium 14500s they are insane.

The one thing I would say is that since I bought my one, another 10 or so have been bought around our small office, and some of the newer ones seem to have problems with changing mode on potholes. This is easily fixed, but the new ones seem to have been assembled by monkeys.
