Damaged Freehub lockring thread

Hi Chaps, I have a freehub that has a shimano thread and the internal thread is slightly damaged. I don't want to force a lockring on and damage it any more than it already is. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a tap to run through and/or what the size of the thread is.

Thanks

Bri

There is a tap available but you'd have to go to the Shimano factory to get it, not a size available from LBS etc. If it is that badly damaged then you're looking at a new freehub body.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Go to your nearest engineering works and see if they could do it for you.
Failing that, get a new free hub, they don't cost that much, just make sure you have a 12mm allen key to remove it.

Given the length of the thread and the fine pitch, it's unlikely that you'll find someone local with a tap of that size - you'd also need to disassemble your hub and remove the spindle to get to the thread - on some hubs you need to remove the freehub first! I'd try refitting the lockring or otherwise just get a new freehub.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • An old trick that may work if the thread is not too badly damaged and if you have a spare steel lockring is to file a slot on the threaded part of the lockring at right angles to the thread and use this modified lockring as a tap to clean out the threads on the free hub body. Slow and careful, and you may save your damaged freehub.
