I have a road bike and cleets etc, however I just bought a Siruss for commuting.

Please could you advise which "recessed" shoes and pedels would be ok?

Shop advised Shimano 520 pedals but do these work with a particular type of Shimano shoes?

Thanks

520's will work with any SPD pedal (recessed cleat with two boltholes.

Shoes are too personal for receommendation - also wouldn't buy online unless you know a particular brand/sizes suits and fits (unless a real knockdown price makes it worthwhile ordering 2-3 pairs and sending back what you don't want)
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

What you need is MBT shoes or road shoes that will take cleats with two holes ( some do and some dont ) but I have gone with MBT shoes on my road bike, which means I have no problems walking.

Are they the type used with those STD pedals?

    +1 dont buy online

One to try in shop that I have found comfortable and robust are my pair of Specialized Shimano Taho's - after two years of daily use they are going strong and comfortable - I bought mine in the sale at Edinburgh bikes

Once you are sorted with shoes spend some time carefully setting the cleats up

Just to confuse matters there are TWO Shimano 520 model pedals.

The M520 is an out and out MTB pedal, double sided, bottom end of the range really for around £15.

The A520 has a clip in mechanism on one side only but has a broad base which looks like a typical road pedal. They are allocated as a touring pedal by description, I have them on my road bike and they perform well. They are a bit pricier at around £30 I think.

Both pedals take the Shimano SPD (not SPD SL) cleats which are the smaller two bolt type used for MTB (usually) as mentioned above.

Both models can be used with recessed type SPD shoes.

My MTB and Cyclocross shoes are Shimano SH-MT40 which have the recess in the middle and tread around the outside for walking on. They have served me well for a few years now. Not sure if they make that model still, but something similar would work.

If you want a 'proper' road shoe then the Sidi Zeta take all types of cleat ( I have them and use SPD cleats with them)

There are other road shoes which take the Shimano SPD cleat but I'm guessing you're after something you can walk in :D like an MTB or touring shoe.

  • +1 for the Spesh Tahoe shoes - used them everyday for about 2 years of commuting and they are barely showing any signs of wear!

I have SPDs on both my commuting steeds - M520s on my singlespeed and M540s on my Sirrus - nothing really to choose and the 520s are nice and cheap. Double sided is a real benefit for me (I have speedplays on my roadie for the same reason!) - just stomp and go!

You also have a choice of SPD cleats - the SH-51 cleats that come as standard with the pedals are sideways (twist) release only, but you can buy the SH-56 multi release cleats that offer more options for disengaging. Again, I have used both, and not much to choose (particularly if you are already used to clipless)

    Hope that's useful

I like the shimano's that look like walking shoes, and I bought them online!

I use mine daily for commuting and they last really well.

    +1 for Spesh Tahos

Previously I had a pair of Spesh Rockhopper shoes that were even better (but not made any more)

Both are just as good for walking as riding and very comfortable.

    Thanks everyone for your advise.

I have clipless road shoes etc for the Road bike, just wanted something to walk around in when commuting on the Sirrus.

Looks like 520's and Shamono shoes!

    Thanks
