this may be a silly question to ask.
i currently have a tripple set up-up front,, am looking at replacing the crank and figured i might try a dual set up with bash ring.. so my silly question is.
will i have to change my shifter and front mech, to accomodate a dual ring ?
i gues the mech will just be a case of resetting the limmit screws,, but what about the shifter ?
i never had a dual set this would be my first.

i didnt change anything when i changed to a dual ring other than remove the outer chainring and replaced it with a bash ring! left the shifter the same and the front mech the same, i just only use two gears on the shifter instead of three.Trek Remedy 7 2009

No changes needed, unless the mech cannot handle the jump (ie if the difference is too large)0

I've done this a couple of times and as above no changes are needed the only thing that I did was wind the top limit screw in on the front mech to prevent an overshift.http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/1994177/

Yup. XT deals fine with 22/36 btw so no probs there. The thing that seems to catch people out is the chainset bolts, generally the ones you have currently won't work with no outer ring, and lots of bashrings need longer ones. I machined a set down for one bike (really not worth the hassle) and just bought a shorter set for the other. Those were the only new parts I needed.
Most people fit bashrings but it's not needed, I've never dropped the chain once on the Soul since I went double and got it adjusted right. If I was scrapign rocks I would but 36T gives a lot of ground clearance anyway.
Most people go to 22/36 but I've still got 22/32 on one bike, it's damn all use on the road and maybe just a hair too low for most offroad use but not badly, so it's worth trying that first.Uncompromising extremist0
