I noticed today that I couldn't get 9th gear ... I reckon it's something to with the tension and the cable has become slack ...

And when I tightened it slighted I found that I had problems getting the bike in 1st gear ..and the chain would slip ... So in the end I reset back what it was .. I know it's simple to correct but there is a fine line between over and under tightening the cable ...

Slighty peeved off

  • Perhaps best to talk about the size of the cog rather than gear. You may not use top normal, so cable tension could be reversed.
  • it could well be dirty cables, and if the spring on you rmech doesnt sit back on its stop properly assuming you have a 'normal' mech that sits on the 9th cog that wont help, - had both these issues previously myself, Now run full outer housing for the rear mech, problem solved!
you can try taking the cables out the stops onm the frame and moving them up and down to see if there is any friction, if so could be worth a new cable set! (fiver or so at the lbs for a full length housing and a couple of quid for an inner!) you may be able to wipe the outers with some lube to free them up a bit, but if they are dirty inside then will run of soon!
