I have 6700 and so far, it has performed faultlessly.
Much prefer the tidier appearance with the concealed cables.

Going back to the original question.....

If you shop around, there is a lot more than £50 difference in price!

I have just bought a SL Triple chainset for £67  (Wiggle), SL Rear Mech £45 and SL Front Mech £27 and a pair of SL Brake calipers for £60 (CRC) :D:D

The chainset is about a quarter of RRP and the rest about half price.

Just biding my time to wait for a pair of Shifters at a bargain price

    Hope this helps,
    Gary.

PS. It doesn't bother me too much about the exposed cables to be honest.
Oh and I feel like I've been raped by an Orangutan  And I've got legs like Girders

it's only the braking part that Shimano suggest you go all 6700, as the 6700 shifters pull more cable so should ideally be used with the 6700 calipers. You won't die* if you mix it up but there you go...

Gearing is fully interchangeable between 6600 and 6700.

    * if you do indeed die as a result then it is not directly my fault, okay

6700 calipers are £72 at CRC, not quite double the price...

but you're right, 6600 is cheaper, no doubt.

6700 rear mechs can also handle bigger cassettes better than 6600 mechs, which is relevant if you want to run 11-28 on 10spd.

    Each to their own.
I think it looks great, and it's even better in the flesh

im after a new groupset for my bike!!!

i love the look of the new Ultegra 6700 (Dura-Ace is out of my budget!), esp. the internally routed cables, new chainset etc, and its lighter!

but having looked at some reviews they say the new 6700 doesnt shift as well as the old SL?

    anyone any ideas/thoughts?

£50 price difference..........just dont know which would be better.....

    thanks

Sort of sounds like you're looking for some sort of MAJOR improvement in the new 6700.
What is an improvement to you? New design? Better functionality? Is new always better?
I doubt you will find much functionality difference between the two. These kind of things happen over over greater spans of time than a year. Not much difference between groupsets year by year but over a period of 10 to 15 years you will probably find that all of these, small, yearly improvements have added up to almost a whole NEW system. You're not going to go wrong with either one. Kind of boils down to which one you like the looks of, or price of.
