I'm not fast to start with - last year I got my average up to 18mph on 50 mile runs.

But so far this year - after the enforced 4 week Christmas break - I'm struggling to get up to 16 mph average, in fact today I couldn't even get to 15.

Is it to do with my clothing - straight forward bib tights for legs but upstairs

a) merino wool l/s layer
b) s/s walking shirt good wicker
c) l/s cycling top
d) Cycling Plus snood
e) long sleeve waterproof cycling fleece
f) winter gloves
   this is hot not barrassed.

mmmm may be that's it

cold air is denser, drag is proportional to density

air at 0c is about 7% denser than air at 20c, so 7% more drag

it is probably the single biggest factor slowing you down

for the rest add on the extra drag from bulkier clothing, plus the impact of thicker lubricants, colder muscles, more oxygen/energy going to maintain body temperature, excess christmas pud etc.
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny
  • +1 everyone's slower in winter, don't worry
