Just putting on some old CDs I never listen to any more and I'd forgotten how ace Pavement were! Gutted I never got to see them live... One of the real pioneering American Indie bands of the 90s AND they invented the "It's never dull in Hull" T-Shirt.

Any other fans?

  • Is that true bout the "never dull in Hull" thing? if so i take my hat off to the chaps and will investigate their work forthwith!

They have reformed and are playing in London and Glasgow in May. Sold out though, maybe a chance of some new stuff by them at some point.

My favourite album was Brighten The Corners. Date with Ikea a standout for me!
  • I saw them in the Garage in Glasgow on the 'Brighten the Corners' tour, & they were cracking. They went off the boil a bit after that, though.

The way I heard it the bass player scrawled it ona T-Shirt he wore at a show at the Adelphi, and a legend was born!

I've had Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain on all night!

Clearly he hadn't spent any significant amount of time in Hull.

What little I heard of them reminded me of elements of Sonic Youth I seem to remember thinking at the time... will have to go on youtube to remind myself of what they sound like tbh though.

As far as I can tell, its nought but paprika, salt and pepper. Having once spent 8 hours there waiting for my brother to finish work I can confirm that it is regularly dull in Hull, but never in the Adelphi.

I spent the best 3 years of my life in Hull and will have nought bad said about the place!

Oh, and as for Pavement, tops!
  • Last time I was in the Adelphi me and my cousin almost ended up in a huge fight with some skin heads.

    True story.

    @NapD: Hull Uni?

Am I the only person in the world who thinks 'Terror Twighlight' is actually rather good? Not their best, admittedly, but still a bit of a corker.
  • I think Terror Twilight may be my 2nd favourite. It's got some great tracks on Major Leagues, The Hexx, Spit on a Stranger, Folk Jam... Even if it is basically a Malkmus album.

There's a blast from the past. Gonna go and listen now.

Saw them in the Town and Country Club around '92. Slanted and Enchanted was out.
Was about 14 and we got a large girl to smuggle in cans of super strongbow. Top
    night.

For some reason, I always loved their version of Here. So many memories.

  • I have no idea what chip spice is. i used to like it when i was little but not now.

Couldn't get away with my myself. The course was fantastic (20th Century History), just didn't want to be there!

Actually it was probably more down to the fact I couldn't take my bike!

Thank Christ someone else agrees - I voiced this opinion on a music forum and was flamed into oblivion by the indier-than-thou hordes!

However, that then means by default that you are cooler than them for liking something less popular! :o

I know someone from Hull. He hasn't lived there for years.

    Nor have I ever been.

I quite like Pavement, though strangely never bought one of their records, or seen them live.

    Funny that

<off to post all about it in the mundane observations thread>

All them bigs hills  Actually Hull Thursday Club met just outside of Cottingham where I was staying. I've ridden around Market Weighton/Pocklington before, really nice round there.

Do the "Grimpeur des Wolds" sportive in July. Amazing how many hills they pack into 100 miles, and starts and finishes in my old school!

Pavement were good, Cut My Hair and Range Life great songs - love the J Mascis cover of the latter especially where Mike Watt goes a bit mad at the end.

I was hoping this was a thread about idiots riding on the pavement and I was coming over to make a smart arse comment about them being one of my favourite bands.... damn you all and your knowledge of choice 90s indie 8)

    Ferens or The Lawns?

I was in Downs Hall at the Lawns for my first two years.

I bought Real Emotional Trash, which is a Malkmus album, & I didn't think much of it. I'll have to go & have another listen I think.

On an obscure-Pavement-side-project-one-upmanship note, does anyone else own a copy of Gary Young's Hospital?
