Salt corrosion

I took my bike out of the shed for the first time since we had the last lot of snow in the south and the rear brake caliper has peeling paint and corrosion, the rotor is rusted and has salt corrosion, also looks like its slightly warped. There is also corrosion on the etching of the rear ABP joint. The chain was rusted solid and took a fair bit of elbow grease to break the seized links and get the whole drivetrain spinning again (it now has a lovely brown tinge instead of being shiny and silver!) Has anyone else had similar experiences over the snowy period?
I'm guessing it's wholly my fault as I didn't hose the bike down (Trek Fuel EX8) after my last commute in the snow. I'm thinking a new rotor and pads are needed for the rear brake, hopefully the chain will last through the summer.

Do you live down south perhaps? If so you're finally having to deal wiv what we have to put up with in Scotland!
Everything corrodes to hell due to the gritting salts...bikes,cars,roads,skin!
Whoops...does mention "south" in your post...sorry:)0 -
I'm really kicking myself for not hosing the bike down before putting it away as I think I may also need to replace the rear wheel hub after a closer inspection. Paint is peeling off all over it and there's plenty of bare alloy showing now, really nice DT Swiss hub too!
Does anyone know a good way of ensuring all the salt is removed and the bike protected as best it can be again?Specialized Rockhopper '07

This happens to motorcycle discs. They're mostly stainless steel so they clean up fine. It will just be surface rust; try rubbing it with wire wool or a scouring pad.
ACF-50 kills corrosion and protects against it. It's clever stuff.

Salt is evil stuff aye!! I had to hose down my road motorcycle every night otherwise the evil salt would eat my paint away.
Wire wool and Wurth Brake Cleaner is what i used on my discs80 x 80 is not enough pixels!!!!

Yep ive had similar this year, thankfully my chain/drivetrain in general seemed ok but most of my bolts on my seatpost, headset and brakes are all tarnished and my rotors are showing rust near the bolt holes, never known it before gave me the shock of my life0

Yep I went out on around 3 bike rides in the snow (deep) without cleaning my bike as it was so spotless when I got back. Now we have some rust. Snow must have a shed load of salt. BUGGER!0

Make sure the rollers move on your chain or you will get fast wear on cassette/rings.
The best rust remover you can get in the UK is plusgas.
It is too good as a penetrating oil so expect it to get everywhereWhy would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?0
