i need a set of cleats for my shimano pdm540 pedals i've seen them on ebay for a tenner but they come without nut plates is this a problem ? do i need nut plates if so can i get them seperately and how much ?

You don't need them unless your current ones are broken/rusted.
Most shoes cant have these replaced anyway as far as I know its only Shimano0 -
most shoes can have the plates replaced, but they can be rather tricky to get to. They're normally under the in-sole protected by a built in piece of card etc.
At least that's how my specialized were.0
