Help - Poor Braking Raleigh Road Bike

I've recently renovated a 1980s road bike for my hilly commute. Everything is okay except for the braking. I've replaced the cables, blocks and levers, stripped and cleaned the brakes and I have new alloy rims. Despite this, the braking is very poor and far inferior to my three modern bikes. This week I nearly rear-ended a car even after putting both feet down on the road.

I’ve decided to replace the single pivot calipers. The bike doesn’t warrant expensive kit so can anybody recommend some cheap replacements? Are dual pivots the only viable option? The new rims are 19mm wide and the current brakes have a long drop at around 45 to 75mm
